History of World Heritage Rideau Canal, comprised of a chain of lakes, rivers and artificial channels, connects Ottawa River at Ottawa/Bytown to Lake Ontario at Kingston

Starting on World Heritage Rideau Canal, we follow both Ontario and Quebec sides of the magnificent Ottawa River. Includes Victoria Island, site of Algonquin First Nation and 19th century lumber trade.

Starting on Rideau Canal we pass through Univsersity of Ottawa, SandyHill and Rideau River to Rideau Hall and grounds, official residence of Canada’s Governor General since 1867 (set on an idyllic 79 acre urban oasis with fountains and ceremonial trees planted by visiting dignitaries).

The World Heritage Rideau Canal pathway takes us through the Dominion Arboretum and Commissioners Park: an extraordinary 26hectare display of flowers and trees since 1889.
This includes the Macoun Memorial Garden, the Lilac walk, the Rock garden, the Perennial Border and the Explorer Rose garden.
